Vegan pizza?! Is that even possible?
When most people think of pizza, they think of cheese–the gooey, stretchey strings of mozerella that seem to define America’s favorite meal. Sure, lots of people have a vegetarian pizza, but a vegan pizza? What is pizza without cheese? We are so used to thinking about pizza [...]

I came across this fantastic painting in the Fogg Museum of Art at Harvard–it was a typical Renaissance Christ-the-child scene, with Jesus, John the Baptist, and cherubs. What made it so much exciting than every other Renaissance painting that I’ve seen is the enormous garlands of vegetables hanging on either side of the babies and [...]
Vegan Purity

When you start to think about all the animal products in your everyday life that are non-vegan, you can get totally overwhelmed: meat, milk, cheese, eggs…but also leather, fur, feathers, wool, and things like gelatin, lecithin, honey, not to mention all the cosmetics and toiletries that are tested on animals. Literally, there are animal [...]
Is it Easy to be Vegan?

Yes! There are SO many delicious plant foods around, along with tons of vegan cookbooks and online recipe databases. It is also really easy to “veganize” many omni recipes just by leaving out the animal products or substituting plant-based products. And there are tons of meat and dairy alternatives, like soy and nut milk, soy [...]
The Food Chain

Ah, the food chain. This goes along with the “but the cavemen ate meat” argument. Since when do we emulate cave men? Likewise, since when are we part of the food chain? The idea is that we, like tigers, have evolved to be the strongest, smartest, most powerful species, and we naturally feed on those [...]
Veganism vs. The Environment

I’ve heard people say that–environmentally speaking–it is better to eat local meat than processed, imported tofu. If you are talking only about the resources used for transportation, then yes, this is probably better. But this idea ignores the fact that all meat, regardless of where it is produces, requires substantially more energy to produce than [...]
“Humane Slaughter”

I hate this phrase, and I don’t understand how anyone can take it seriously. Slaughter isn’t even a euphemism! And there is no way that any type of human murder would ever be called “humane.” Along with “humane slaughter,” I would group some other, less blatantly offensive terms:”grass-fed,” “organic” and “local” meat, “free-range eggs,” etc. [...]
Easy Veggie Lunches

I made this list after people started asking me for lunch ideas:
#1 best food ever: hummus!
It can be eaten…
-In a sandwich or wrap, with lots of veggies
-On toast
-As a dip with veggies & tortilla chips or pita bread
-As sauce for pasta or couscous—dilute with olive oil
[...]
Past, Present, and Future

A common misconception—if often on a subconscious level—of vegetarianism is that it represents an idealized desire to return to some sort of ideal, primitive lifestyle. But the evidence that we have not always eaten meat is intended only to prove that we have no physiological need for meat. And it is not meant to condemn those who historically consumed [...]
Defining “Vegan”
Posted in About Veganism on March 6, 2008 | Leave a Comment »
What is a vegan? The Oxford English Dictionary says “A person who on principle abstains from all food of animal origin.” This is true, but also false. A vegan is someone who is awake. Someone who has looked down at their dinner plate and seen what is really there. Someone who finds no comfort in a [...]
