I couldn't agree more. I had a job like that, where my co-workers came to me with questions and before I knew it they had ordered me a vegan cake for my birthday. I never forced my beliefs on them, but I just made them known. I find that people always come to me when they realize that I am not going to attack them.

Who was the crazy vegan who gave us all such a bad rep? They must have been mighty crazy because that stigma has gone a looong way and I don't know any crazy vegans.

I agree! It is hard to balance my passion for the reasons I'm vegan with tact sometimes. I also used to dismiss questions quick so as not to span the obvious disconnect with non-vegans even further. Choosing your battles is important, Ive learned... and cupcakes often help open minds!

This is such a great post. I totally know what you're talking about. I tend to visit the forums for a day or two and then take a long break from them. I don't understand using one's time and energy to bash people who care about animals. Why not devote one's resources to going after animal abusers?

And I subscribe to Vegan Outreach's philosophy, too, about paying attention to the big ingredients and not worrying so much about the small, hidden ones. We want to make veg*anism look easy (which it can be), not grueling.

"to assume that they are willing and eager to hear what I have to say."

For me that's the hardest part. While I don't want to hide that I've vegan, I tend to give very short answers if someone asks me questions about it because I assume they won't be receptive. But like you said, I really need to go into the conversation assuming that the person wants the information. After all, they wouldn't ask if they didn't want info, right?

I guess I misunderstood what you said. I thought you were saying that if you were living like a gatherer-hunter you wouldn't have a problem with using nonhuman animals. I didn't appreciate that you meant living like that thousands of years ago, when people generally had no notion that what they were doing was wrong.

Hmmm...I don't know how well I explained myself in the post, and to be honest I'm still pondering this issue. The problem I have is with making a judgment on a group of people 1,000 years ago who basically didn't have a choice whether or not to eat meat; I don't think it is fair to say that everyone in the history of the world who killed animals for food was immoral. Nor do I believe they were entirely justified: Obviously, humans have done many terrible and inexcusable things to animals. I just don't feel that I am in a position to judge them.

I do know that today, especially in the west, we do have the resources and knowledge to chose a life that does not exploit animals, and we should not ride on thousands of years of meat-eating traditions as an excuse.

How does killing a small number of animals in a gatherer-hunter society get around our ethical obligations not to harm nonhuman animals.

Good post,

I always find it funny when people assert that cultural pressure isn't playing a role in their decision. When you are entrenched in a culture it is nearly impossible to remove yourself from it's assumptions.

I work in a physics department that is (surprise) male dominated. There has been a desire to hire more womyn professors, however I often hear from people that they should just hire the best qualified. For some reason they can't see the patriarchy, and instead of seeing this as a positive way to help break hundreds of years of social oppression they claim that such hiring practices are sexist! The white male is so advantaged that he can't even recognize his elite position in society.

The problem with veg*nism isn't that people think it's feminine, it's that people think of feminine as undesirable and associate it with terms like weak and passive. Not to mention that males who show any sort of femininity are often considered gay... Using gay as an insult has got to be near the top of my list of the most offensive things you can do.
